Turn off the TV!
April 5, 2009
Remember the days when the laughter of your kids filled the air of the family room instead of the space-age noises emitted by PS2 and Wii ? Family Dinners
April 5, 2009
Family Dinner – the most important meal of the day ? In a time where the family unit falls more and more apart, dinner has increasingly become an issue for family counselors everywhere. Shifting the focus from what is being served on the plate, it is the getting together on a regular basis that makes family dinners a healthy treat. A study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) and Nick at Nite’s “Family Table” shows that teenagers who share a meal with their families only twice a week or less are seven times more likely to develop substance abuse habits than those of their peers who enjoy a family dinner 5 nights or more every week. Sitting down and talking with your kids not only prevents smoking, drinking and drug abuse – teens who share regular dinners with their parents and families are more likely to receive good grades and show an overall better academic performance. So next time you are thinking of scheduling a dinner date with friends or business associates – try and make it a luncheon. With the right attitude not only will you have a lot more fun – but will also gain an insight into your youngsters’ everyday lives, who their friends are, what the newest slang word is or the latest internet joke. Family dinners have an impact on society ‐ is there a better reason for adjusting your „conflicting schedules“?
